David Briggs: Embracing the Canvas of Life

David Briggs is a self-taught artist whose work pulses with the raw energy of unbridled creativity and resilience. Born legally blind, Briggs didn't see his first cloud until the age of 9, a transformative experience that would shape his unique perspective on the world and art.

Overcoming immense challenges, Briggs first made his mark in the tech world. He founded and crowdfunded an autostereoscopic tablet computer company, gaining recognition from prestigious outlets like The New York Times, TechCrunch, and Engadget. His innovative spirit led him to become a speaker and mentor at SXSW, being named Microenterprise Person of the year for Nevada and inspiring others with his vision and determination.

Briggs' journey took an unexpected turn after meeting Tony Hsieh and the downtown project of Las Vegas. No short of a seismic shift in awareness he became an elite vacation rental host in Las Vegas. Over the decade that followed, he welcomed more than a million visitors, an experience that would later influence his artistic sensibilities. It was during this time that Briggs stumbled into the world of art, driven by necessity and sparked by creativity.

"I needed a 4'x6' piece of art that vibed with this old Playboy exec's mansion turned vacation rental and we had its first check-in within hours," Briggs recalls. "I had some spray paint and a board handy, so I just made it happen." This urgent decoration soon evolved into a form of catharsis, a way to process the complexities of his demanding and spontaneous life.

What began as late-night spray creations and weekend painting sessions blossomed into a passionate pursuit. Briggs' diverse portfolio is a testament to his insatiable curiosity and willingness to experiment. From large-scale abstract expressionist pieces echoing the chaotic beauty of city life to intimate sunsets and waveforms capturing moments of quiet contemplation, his work defies easy categorization.

Briggs moves fluidly between oil paints, acrylics, and mixed media, often incorporating unconventional materials that reflect his belief in the extraordinary potential of the ordinary. Influenced by the bold color palettes of Wassily Kandinsky and the emotional depth of Frida Kahlo, he infuses his work with a unique blend of vibrant energy and introspective depth.

"My art is a bridge between worlds," Briggs explains. "It's where the structured thinking of my past meets the boundless possibilities of creativity. Each piece is a conversation between who I was and who I'm becoming."

His creative process is as dynamic as his art. Briggs approaches each canvas with a mixture of meticulous planning and spontaneous improvisation, allowing the piece to evolve organically. His studio, a converted warehouse loft, is a carefully curated chaos of colors, textures, and half-formed ideas waiting to spring to life.

As he continues to make his mark on the art world, Briggs is driven by a desire to inspire others to embrace their creative passions, regardless of age or background. He regularly speaks about the transformative power of creativity.

Looking to the future, Briggs is excited about pushing the boundaries of his art even further. He's currently working on a series that explores the intersection of digital technology and traditional painting techniques, a reflection of his journey from the tech world to the artist's studio.
